You’re seriously just living in a fantasy world if you think that you can just say “You know, I SHOULD be able to drink without being worried about being raped!” but you can’t. In a perfect utopia people would be able to drink without worrying about being assaulted, robbed, raped, but do we live in that perfect utopia? No, we don’t. You all honestly need to look at things realistically; drinking makes it much more difficult to defend yourself in a dangerous situation, to say no.
We shouldn’t HAVE to worry about these kind of things, but the fact is that in this imperfect world we need to. You can’t leave the front door open and leave, then come back to find you’re stuff stolen and say “Well you know what, robbery is bad, no one should do this, how DARE someone rob me, I should be able to leave my door open whenever I please without having to worry about my stuff being stolen, people need to stop being bad!”
Please get your head out of your ass and realize that people aren’t going to stop doing bad things, they will always happen, not all rapists are going to target the drunk girl or the girl dressed like a provocatively, but it does heighten your risk.
As for dressing provocatively, should you be able to dress however you want? Hell yeah you should! But in this world, there are going to be guys that are bigots and take it as a sign that you’re easy and will put out no matter what. Guys like that aren’t going to stop existing, it doesn’t matter if you educate them, if they’re willing to rape in the first place some guys just won’t change, so refusing to take precaution because ideally you shouldn’t have to is just putting yourself at risk.
Not to mention all of the serial rapists that don’t rape for sex, they rape for power. There is NO changing them, and it’s common knowledge that some of them will target the drunk girl or the girl who is dressed provocatively.
You can’t put on the blinders and just say “Nope, going to ignore the risk factor of what I’m doing just because I should be able to do it”. Is it ever the victim’s fault? No, it isn’t. It is the fault of the rapist. But you cannot put feeling empowered above protecting yourself and using common sense.
in our society men are brought up to feel that they deserve sex enough to take advantage of others. we live in a rape culture. that’s not “awww boo, imperfect world” that is MEDIA PERPETUATED, PATRIARCHAL, 100% CHOICE-DRIVEN SEXISM & VICTIM-BLAMING. it really doesn’t have to be this way, sure there are some psychos out there that commit assaults for deep psychological reasons, but we’ve also got media that tells guys “oh hey, you’re a horny animal! she’s asking for it!” 24/7.
you’re also ignoring a lot of the socio-economic issues that go along with crimes like robbery. IE: no one needs to rape someone else so that they can provide food/clothing/shelter for him/herself or their family.
so sluts, drunks, allies, let’s all continue to stand up and fight the good fight against rape culture. we don’t have to just accept these things. this is a civil rights movement just like any other.
Are you kidding me? Men do not rape because of media influences! To degrade men and make them out to be such weak minded human beings that they can’t make their own decisions, however wrong they may be, without being influenced is completely sexist!
Not to mention, why are you creating this imaginary message from the media that doesn’t exist? Yes, the media emphasizes sex, but NOT that it’s all women want, if anything it emphasizes that MEN want sex and WOMEN choose when it happens.
It will always be my firm belief that media does not make a rapist, and it does not make a murderer, either. Are you going to say that violent video games make serial killers, too? Because that’s the same exact thought process. Influence»Action, as if there are no other factors with LOGIC behind them. You cannot blame the media for the actions of a single man that does not have the morals, common sense, or mental stability to make better decisions. No man is going to be so influenced by the media that he thinks “Oh, okay, I guess despite knowing it’s wrong and illegal I’m going to go and fucking rape women anyway, BECAUSE TELIVISION/MUSIC/MOVIES SAYS I CAN!”
It’s extremely sexist to put men into this role of ignoramuses that can make their own goddamn decisions without some kind of influence. What about all the men that AREN’T raping? If media is so powerful in their decision making process, why the fuck isn’t every male exposed to it going out and raping women? BECAUSE IT’S NOT THE MEDIA. THE COMMON FACTOR HERE IS A PERSON MAKING A DECISION TO RAPE.
And stop wearing the word slut like it’s a fucking badge of honor, there’s a difference between having sexual freedom and degrading yourself and calling it “empowerment”.
Edit: Also, way to go on completely avoiding the actual point of my comparison to robbery, I guess it hit too close to home and was far too accurate for you not to twist things around as if we’re actually debating why people rob people. But if you really want to I guess I can point out that hey, you’re fucking stupid for basically saying “some people need to steal”.
well yeah, “some guys can’t control themselves” is a very sexist thing to say, which is why it pisses me off that people use it as a justification for rape. my brothers aren’t dumb horny animals. media influence says that women should be ready and willing to fuck at all times. sorry if you don’t understand how this works, i’m not going to be your media ethics professor.
i am a slut. i like sex. i like doing it with whoever i want to do it, whenever we feel like doing it. i am empowered because i won’t let a 16 year old smart ass make me feel ashamed of my enjoying my life and my physical autonomy. there’s nothing wrong with that.
enjoy your “equal rights as men” that makes you $.75 for every man’s earned $1.00. i just hope none of your friends have been victims of rape or incest because the stuff you post about “how rape works and this only happens when the rapist is like this and the victim is like this” could really hurt someone even worse after experiencing such a trauma. i would continue trying to enlighten you but i’m realizing that you’re in a bubble of adolescent comfort where you can’t really think abstractly about the challenges other people experience in their lives and use the awesome skill that is empathy— i was in the same place once several years ago— and i hope that you can have some awesome experiences that make you realize that feminists really aren’t your enemy, nor are we trying to piss you off the way that you do us.

If people take the initiative, definitely! SlutWalk Toronto is active in facilitating other demonstrations, and I’m sure plenty of other Asheville supporters would be willing to help plan & give guidelines for making it successful.
I’m from Charlotte originally, and given the size of it’s “alternative” and LGBTQ communities I think that it could happen there if a group took the initiative to publicize it and make it happen. Where would you want one to happen?
